HACKNEY WICK BUSINESS WASTE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
We recently commissioned PRD (the consultant team who helped the area secure CEZ status) to assess current (non-household) waste volumes for the Hackney Wick area and create a proxy to measure the progress of the pilot/ demonstrator projects.
The findings are stark, for example HW produces a significant amount of mixed recycling waste. These materials could potentially be diverted from the typical waste management facilities. Businesses in HWFI came together recently to look at the findings and the ideas around how we can create a system change to turn waste into useful products and energy. The research is supporting us to develop projects in the area that tackle textile waste; food and packaging waste. It has also helped us form a group of interested businesses who want to be part of our strategy for a circular economy area.
NEW PARTNERSHIP
We are proud to be working in partnership with London CLT on community-led housing for the area. The first site we are reviewing is within the East Wick and Sweet Water development on the park. The opportunity is for 16 community-led homes. We are working with London CLT to propose a response.
SUPPORT FOR OUR APPROACH
To support our community-led housing work, we were recently awarded grant funding from Community-led Housing London to develop our proposals.
This month we started working with Hackney CVS and a number of other youth organisations to get young Hackney locals involved in the circular economy hub project.
WORKING WITH AND FOR THE COMMUNITY
Great news - we have become a Community Interest Company!
This means we have no shareholders, make no profit and all funds raised will be invested into our community development work.
