What’s on this Summer

London Festival of Architecture

We’re at the London Festival of Architecture in June, speaking at a number of talks and hosting tours exploring the built environment in HWFI and our work with local circular economy businesses. All events are free to attend.

Circular Economy Hub progress and plans

This month we started working with Hackney CVS and a number of other youth organisations to get young Hackney locals involved in the circular economy hub project.

Driving this initiative forward, we’re so excited to have David Kingsley at the helm as our youth coordinator. David comes with a wealth of experience in youth engagement having worked closely with residents and young people in Hackney. He has previously worked for Hackney CVS as their Neighbourhoods Coordinator and Youth Leader and with Hackney Council's Young Futures Commission. David will lead the recruitment of local young people and work with them to take advantage of opportunities from the project.

We’re also launching a research project to understand the waste and recycling needs of local businesses better. Our findings will help us develop ways to support local businesses in becoming more sustainable.

The future of co-working and living in the Wick

Creative Wick’s New Citizen Science-led research findings were published late last month. The analysis, which was part funded by HWFI CDT and the Creative Enterprise Zone, shows the demand for co-living and working housing in the area.

The findings show the main attraction of this style of accommodation lies in the benefits of living in a tight community, sharing expenses, sharing resources, being able to work from home in some cases and the affordability of the mass of space.

We will be using this work to make the case to public authorities and landowners that products like this need to be considered when developing new housing in the area. We will also be tendering for the Community-led Housing development. If you want to get involved in this project please get in touch with us at alex@wickcdt.org

Space for community use

Come join our community gardening group at Gainsborough Bridge gardens. We meet every other Saturday at lunchtime by the bridge. Everyone is welcome to join us and our partners at Eco-Active. The initiative is made possible by a recent licensing agreement with Hackney council to keep the gardens in community hands.

What’s up next?

We have a number of well established relationships with public and private sector landowners and are working away on proposals with them for space to be transferred into community ownership through the HWFI CDT. We’ll make these partnerships public soon! Rest assured we are working hard to establish more community ownership spaces as our core mission.

If you’re interested in helping to secure space for the community, reach out to us at alex@wickcdt.org
